Pg1 Sanding

Sanding Your Carvings

One thing I have never enjoyed is sanding, so I try to make it as painless as possible.
I have found many different tools that I like to use to sand my carvings:

Sand-O-Flex Contour Sander

This is really good for finish sanding irregular shapes. I use this sander a lot to sand the "fuzzies"
off of my carvings. It looks really aggressive. But it actually is very gentle on the fine detailed
carvings.

You can chuck this sander up in any drill. I have an inexpensive inline air drill that I use it with. This
drill has a max rpm of about 2400rpms which is just right for sanding with the Sand-O-Flex

For a little more aggressive sanding I use a "mop sander"  Which is basically a mandrel with
cloth-backed sandpaper mounted on it. The sandpaper has slits cut in it. If you want a wider
mop then space the sandpaper with some washers. It is important to note that when you start
with new sandpaper it takes a little time to break it in. Running it against the edge of a scrap
piece of wood helps to break it in faster...

I also run this sander in my inline air drill.

I also have a flex shaft rotary tool that I like to use to get into some smaller areas. I use it with a small
mandrel and a smaller mop sander. I also like to use abrasive pads. I cut out a circle and mount on the
same mandrel.

Here is a picture of the abrasive pad on the left and the mop sander on the right. These are about
1-1/2" diameter. On the right, you can see how the mop sander is simply made up of strips of
cloth backed paper.
