Sanding Your Carvings
One thing I have never enjoyed is sanding, so I try to make it as painless as possible.
I have found many different tools that I like to use to sand my carvings:
Sand-O-Flex™ Contour Sander
This is really good for finish sanding irregular shapes. I use this sander a lot to sand the "fuzzies" You can chuck this sander up in any drill. I have an inexpensive inline air drill that I use it with. This For a little more aggressive sanding I use a "mop sander" Which is basically a mandrel with I also run this sander in my inline air drill. I also have a flex shaft rotary tool that I like to use to get into some smaller areas. I use it with a small Here is a picture of the abrasive pad on the left and the mop sander on the right. These are about
off of my carvings. It looks really aggressive. But it actually is very gentle on the fine detailed
carvings.

drill has a max rpm of about 2400rpms which is just right for sanding with the Sand-O-Flex™
cloth-backed sandpaper mounted on it. The sandpaper has slits cut in it. If you want a wider
mop then space the sandpaper with some washers. It is important to note that when you start
with new sandpaper it takes a little time to break it in. Running it against the edge of a scrap
piece of wood helps to break it in faster...

same mandrel.
